Blogged on this site VW Camper repair

All the major welding has been blogged on this site - the work in restoring this shell was carried out by a highly skilled NASCAR bodyshop guy, top quality work using replacement panels include lower nose inside and out, passenger a-pillar, OG doglegs both sides were used, complete WW replacement front floor, cargo door sill inside and out, short sill, rear battery tray, OG drivers rear corner replaced, long sill repaired, local floor repairs, cargo door bottoms, drivers door bottom, roof repair. Suffice to say all the major welding is done - loads of new Gerson funky green on this Bus. Over 80 workshop hours and many funky green panels were used.

Door gaps are good, the doors close well but this bus is not ready for paint - the primer is over a kaleidoscope of original colours. To make ready for paint a light skim of filler will be required in a lot of places. The cargo doors will rattle and squeak when driving until door seals have been put in.

Front and rear bumpers are US spec - both are fairly beat up with dents, rust and weld repairs. They are however all German and thick steel.

Before restoration Lenoir was a running driving Bus but with a truly awful oil leak from the pushrod tubes. To fix this we rebuilt the H5 engine to stock looking spec. We split the case, cleaned and measured everything, and what needed replacing was replaced. New stock camshaft and new followers, new pushrod tubes, all new seals, bearings, etc and re-assembled using Kuril K2. Petrol tank flushed, brand new sender fitted, new petrol filter and lines and a new fuel pump. German 009 and German Solex carburettor with stock air cleaner setup. Correct tinware is now with the engine. End float set, brand new stock exhaust, run up carefully to bed in - valve clearances reset. This is a refresh not a restored engine.

We also fitted a pair of good German heat exchangers, new heater tubes, cable and heater knob - heaters now work and are HOT. Those who have working heaters will appreciate the work required to get the original setups working.

Electrically we fitted european spec german rear lights units and lenses (the good expensive ones), US spec front light units all RHD converted. Completely rebuilt wiper setup, new spindles, 12v motor, wiper blades and washer bottle - but needs a correct switch to make the park feature work. Wiring under dash gone through and re-terminated as necessary. Hazards and indicators all work excellently. Interior lights works. New 12V battery and strap. 12V system throughout - relays, motors and a new voltage regulator. Note the starter is not new and sometimes does not engage. Petrol gauge works rock steady as does the speedo with a new cable - again rock steady, all instrument lights work.

New handbrake cables and recent cylinders all round, brakes work well. Stock system.

Both front quarterlight windows have latches, but the seals are all shot and need replacing to make a dry cabin. Up front there is a new set of our ABS kick panels, a church key setup, and best of all there is a set of newly recovered grey front seats and a brand new front rubber mat. New font lap belts only - be easy to upgrade to 3 point. There is an original middle mat and a custom rear rubber mat. New rear hatch seal and WW rear glass seal so no fumes here.

One of the pop out windows has been refreshed with antirust paint and a new seal but all of the pop outs are rusty and the glass looks pitted and beyond polishing - expect to replace them all at some point.

Inside Lenoir will need some work to make acceptable, for example more seals and paint, headliner and panels etc.

In summary all the hard work has been done, and with a blank canvas like this converting to a splittie camper van is easy from here.
