Quick Overview

Rebuilt 1200 short block 1961 block number

Product Description

Engine number 5609557 which dates it around February 1961 - perfect base for that period correct engine.

This particular block was running in 2006/7 and was selected for a special rebuilt by an old school engine builder in North Carolina - Don Eastwood (now retired).

Build spec;

Has been bored for cam bearings - which on these 40hp (US spec hp) engines is THE mod to do. Normally these engines ran their cams directly on the case and suffered greatly as a result.

Has had flywheel resurfaced and shimmed for end float. 180mm flywheel with 6V starter teeth.

Lifter bores clearanced - the lifters for this engine were originally complex parts but with the bores clearanced on the back surface it is possible to run later style lifters - as fitted.

This particular block has been rebuilt by VW at some point in its past and is marked as such.

Correct 6mm oil pump cover, oil galleries drilled and cleaned, single relief case obviously.

Original German parts throughout.- crank, con rods, etc but with new main and cam bearings.

Requires exterior tin to be complete, this era engine was also known as a stale air engine, where the cabin air was heated by passing air over the piston cylinders and then directed into the cabin of the campervan. This form of heating got the nickname because the air was not considered fresh - as the engine got older then the chances of an odd oil leak would make the heating air smell a little. In 1963 Volkswagen went to a fresh air system where the heated air was obtained from the exhaust manifolds only - nicknamed fresh air heating.

In the US this is called a 40hp sae engine - its design capacity is 1192cc - or the VW 1200 engine. Bore of 77mm and stroke of 64mm this size engine was the mainstay of Volkswagens vehicles from 1960 or so through to 1966/7 for the Beetle and 1964/5 for the Bus. With a compression ratio of 7.0 is what not a highly stressed engine and quite tolerant to fuel quality. Max engine horsepower was 40hp at 3900 rpms. Timing 10 degrees before top dead centre. Typically 6 volt electrics.
